The place where you can see the view of Davao City from atop is at Jack’s Ridge Resort and Restaurant. To be on top of this marvelous place is sure astounding. It’s open day and night for viewing purposes with minimal fee. But if you dine and unwind in the cozy restaurant and café inside, viewing and picture taking are included. Historically, this place was once the headquarter of the Japanese troops in World War II. Now, it’s one of the city’s wonder-places for both tourists and locals.

View from Jack's Ridge by day

Not only is the view interesting at Jack’s Ridge but the different amenities as well. You can bring your family to a swimming day at Kool Kat’s Pool or have an enjoyable singing night at the BMW KTV and Piano Bar. Even a simple dinner at Taklobo Restaurant makes the night magical with their sumptuous meals and desserts. Hmm, I missed the Calamares we had one night when we were there.

View from Jack's Ridge by night

How about planning your wedding at this Amphitheater and the reception at Penmar Hall. It will be a wonderful experience of a lifetime. Jack’s Ridge Resort and Restaurant has all you need from cozy dining to simple relaxation.

Your wedding at Jack's Ridge Amphitheater

Jack’s Ridge Resort and Restaurant is located at Shrine Hills, Matina, Davao City. You may reach the place by a taxi or your own car, or tricycles maybe.

It’s more than a year ago when I posted about Robinsons Cybergate, which was then under construction. The mall has finally opened sometime in May 2009. Last summer, we took the chance to visit the actual place and to my surprise, it was smaller than I thought. Some of the room-spaces on the second floor were still empty. However, the supermarket and a hardware have been opened and serving the needs of the people of Davao. There were cafés, restaurants, spa and offices in the building so it didn’t look that empty though. But I did like the quiet and not so crowded ambiance of the place. Here’s Robinsons Cybergate Davao.

The Department of Tourism has recently presented the top 3 RP destinations based on tourist arrivals from January to March. Among the three, Davao City named as the third top destination following Cebu and Boracay. With 156,468 tourist arrivals recorded, Davao continues to soar high as one of the top “must-visit” cities in the country before the year ends.

Balikbayan visitors and tourists of this city are not only overwhelmed by the emerging shopping malls, hotels and restaurants but the naturally rich flora and fauna as well. Island resorts are also one of the reasons why Davao City is popular among tourists. Furthermore, the celebrations like Araw ng Dabaw and Kadayawan invite visitors who want to witness and celebrate with each year.

Places to see in Davao:

Crocodile Farm
Puentespina Orchid Garden
Philippine Eagle
Paradise Island
Malagos Farm House
Malagos Garden Resort
- and many more

Davao Zone will feature those places in a later postings…

In all the places to shop here in Davao City, there’s no place quite like Aldevinco. This is the place to visit for all ethnic handmade products.

For more than 40 years, Aldevinco has become a landmark of the city. It showcases the rich culture and heritage of Mindanao through the abundant array of Batik products like bags, dusters, slippers, table cloths, textiles and indigenous musical instruments.

The place actually is a mini-mall with plenty of small stalls. Access is easy because it’s located at the heart of the city along C.M. Recto Avenue. The shopkeepers are friendly and very accomodating and if you are skilled in haggling, you can save lots of shopping money.

Everytime a friend from Manila comes here in Davao for whatever reason, I usually take them here and they’ll just be thrilled at the unique and beautiful handicrafts and the low prices.

The P2 – billion, 85 kilometer Talaingod – Valencia, Bukidnon Road is already making great progress, promising improved transportation between Cagayan de Oro City, Bukidnon and Davao del Norte. The once dilapidated, winding road with sometimes dangerous twists is now gone. Heavy equipment and machineries are cutting mountain sides to widen the road and straighten the curves.

President Arroyo personally came last February 8, 2008 to unveil the project. Governor Del Rosario of Davao del Norte is the man behind this important project.

The road will truly improve the living condition of the people in the area as they can easily transport products to the urban centers, particularly in Davao del Norte. “We can also readily bring essential government services to the indigenous communities”, Del Rosario said. This mega project is touted to be completed in 2010 and is expected to increase the volume of export in the region and accelerate socio-economic development in the province.
