Davao Light Rail Transit

Categories: Developments

Davaoeños will soon enjoy the proposed Davao Light Rail Transit. The project was one of the results following the BIMP-EAGA investment conference held in this city last October.

The Davao Integrated Development Program (DIDP), Mindanao Business Council (MinBC), MCC Capital Inc., a UK-based financial institution, and local government units in the Davao Region have signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) on the proposed Davao Light Rail Transit (LRT) and the construction of a bridge in Samal.

Wendel Avisado, executive director of the DIDP stated that “the LRT system will serve the coastal builtup area of Davao City, as well as neighboring areas in Davao del Sur (Sta. Cruz), and Davao del Norte (Panabo City).” He said that the project cost was R240 billion in 1997 when it was first proposed. “It is also proposed to be 60 kilometers in length and a BOT (build, operate, transfer) project,” Avisado said.

The intended railway system will initially stretch across the major highways of Tagum City-Carmen-Panabo City-Davao City-Sta. Cruz-and Digos City in Davao del Sur.

Personally, this railway system means less hassle and shorter traveling time to the rural areas where there are still many unexplored thrills and adventures to be experienced.

Big time investors from the capital city have finally found a landmark for another beneficial project to boost Davao City at large. It’s the Robinsons Mall that’s going to be up soon in Bajada district, precisely near the Water District. As you can see, the construction is now going on and the countdown begins until its proposed operation starts.

The people of Davao are more than pleased to welcome the presence of the mall and it’s only a matter of time going on all the malls in the city. Furthermore, the mall developer will not only finalize the mall project but it will be preceded by the construction of Robinsons housing projects as well. The proposed sites will be at the Diversion Road in Buhangin with two major projects and one in Lanang (in front of Lanang Golf & Country Club).

Durian from Davao

Categories: Dine and Food

The durian fruit has become synonymous with Davao City, in fact, Davao has been called the Durian capital of the Philipines.  Davaoeños enjoy plenty of exotic and tropical fruits all year long like mangoes, mangosteen, pomelos, bananas. But when it comes to the ultimate fruit experience, nothing tops the durian.

Durian is commonly called the “king of fruits” or “fruit of the gods”. Now, someone who don’t know jack about durian might think it a very beautiful, truly unique and  almost divine fruit. Unique might be the only  word fitting for it. For one thing, the durian is an ugly fruit, with a hard and thorny skin. The internet is full of images of it. See for yourself. Ugly, right?

What makes it truly unparalleled is the odor and taste of its pulp. The smell at first might offend a lot of people not accustomed to it. The meaty pulp ,however, is the real reason why it is called the fruit of the gods. From the words of the British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace provides a much-quoted description of the flavour of the durian:

“The five cells are silky-white within, and are filled with a mass of firm, cream-coloured pulp, containing about three seeds each. This pulp is the edible part, and its consistence and flavour are indescribable. A rich custard highly flavoured with almonds gives the best general idea of it, but there are occasional wafts of flavour that call to mind cream-cheese, onion-sauce, sherry-wine, and other incongruous dishes. Then there is a rich glutinous smoothness in the pulp which nothing else possesses, but which adds to its delicacy. It is neither acid nor sweet nor juicy; yet it wants neither of these qualities, for it is in itself perfect. It produces no nausea or other bad effect, and the more you eat of it the less you feel inclined to stop. In fact, to eat Durians is a new sensation worth a voyage to the East to experience. … as producing a food of the most exquisite flavour it is unsurpassed.”

These are among the reasons why durian is among the most exotic and unique fruits in the world, and it grows abundantly here in Davao. So pack your bags, put on your adventure cap and get a taste of heaven on earth.

Ayala Mall To Rise In Davao

Categories: Malls

This is good news to all Dabawenyos!

The application of the Floirendo property for reclassification has finally been approved, thus a go signal to pave the way for the construction of the Ayala Mall.  The 55,000 sq m project is set to stand along J.P. Laurel Avenue in Bajada district, in front of Redemptorist Church.

The approval was concluded two days ago by the Davao City Council in a unanimous vote, and the 25 councilors present believed the project would land a job for many Dabawenyos.  It was assured that construction will start this year or early next year.

Personally, I am happy that the Mayor and the Davao City Council welcome this kind of project to Davao City.  This is not only to boost the city as a haven for investment but for economic growth as well.  I can cite that Bajada is quite perfect for the project as it is accessible to all residents from different directions.

The project will not only consist of malls but offices, hotel, call center facilities and condominium as well.  I can’t wait to see this project stand in 2010.  I wish they could finish it earlier.
